Modelling a Stop-Motion Seagull in Blender | Washed Up
Here is a timelapse breakdown of how I modelled, textured and rigged the seagull characters from my short film Washed Up. I used Blender to create this film and these characters and had a lot of fun trying to emulate a stop motion look, especially with the felt fuzz on these seagulls.
I hope this breakdown is interesting to some of you, feel free to ask me any further questions about this process in the comments.

You can purchase the 3D digital model used in this render here: bit.ly/TARDISmodel To celebrate the 60th, I wanted to make a quick render of my TARDIS model flying through the vortex. I created this original interpretation of the time vortex using many noise textures within Blender. I then challenged myself to make a weird ambient synth version of the Doctor Who theme to accompany the render, a...

This is my entry to the August 2023 Pwnisher Community Render Challenge, Boss Fight. The theme of this challenge fit perfectly with the characters and scene I had already created for my upcoming short film 'Washed Up'. The Utopia Trial (A Sci-Fi Short Film)
That feeling of power, to truly have it and to be able to control and move - I really felt like this shortfilm made me see it. Great work ! I'm aspiring to also make fantasy short films, so this is truly inspiring.
I really love the project
Amazing
Wow man great stuff, genius, luck forwards to more...
Thank you, I have lots more in the works!
Wasn't ready to see a small fish accept death
Great film, a sad thing too, still how many dancers were lost back then...
I love this! Nice work on the short film!
Glad you liked it!
Love the way the birds move, very enjoyable short!
They were so funny to animate! Thank you!
Great stuff man. Loved how maniacal the birds were. The story had an old Pixar short feeling to it (the good kind, not Tin Toy baby vibes) that I really liked.
Thank you so much! Wow that's so nice, I'm glad you thought so
so cool to see this stuff!
I've been waiting for this! Are you gonna do one for the environment?
Glad you liked it, I would but I unfortunately didn't screen record much of the environment build. But it is mainly just a plane with some noise generated displacement applied to it. The water is another plane shrinkwrapped to the beach so it follows it's shape. And the trees are all very simple, pretty much just spheres on a stick haha.
@@LiamJMWilson I was interested on how you did the end credits text.
Ah, so that was done by creating the text in Photoshop, and bringing it in to use as a bump map texture on the sand. I exported like 6 different images of text to swap between the waves.
I must admit that the fingerprints really made me doubt whether it was stopmotion or CG while watching the film. It's really well made !
That's nice to hear, thank you!
I love the short film you made, it inspires me a lot, the birds made me laugh a lot. Thank you for making this video of how you made them, you explained it very well!
Thanks so much. Glad you enjoyed it! I hoped it could be interesting or informative to people. Thank you.
Sir thanks for sharing ❤ love from India
The film was super fun and it was really cool to see the process behind it! I hope you make more videos like this, it was super interesting. Great work!
Thank you! I always will do, I've got so much value from these kinds of videos and so I always strive to make them for my films too, and hopefully others find them helpful.
Great fun!
Great job!🤩
Wow really good job And kinda videos like this gives me inspiration to keep improving in this great field
Good! Happy to hear that! You definitely should keep it up!
VERY well done! Amazing pacing, you really knew how long to hold on the bird and fish having the stare off. One question, how did you automate a randomization of a vector location or rotation of the fish's imperfection map per frame of movement? Did you use drivers?
Glad you enjoyed it! And yes that was using drivers from the transformation of each bone, plugged into the transformation of the texture coordinates of the noise and fingerprint textures.
I think Finley the fish would be pretty damn happy with 10k views in a week 🐟
Love it!! the title and credits also adorable :)
I agree making the camera 24 fps was a good move, it makes it feel like I'm really there watching living puppets and not watching a video game cutscene instead
Perfect, I'm glad you think so too, it made such a difference.
Very good.
Wait this was made in Blender?! I seriously thought it was clay stop motion! You did a very good job with building up the tension of the story and writing a conclusion. Also, I appreciate the happy ending since I swear most animated shorts on UA-cam always end super depressingly xD This must have taken forever to make so wonderful job! :D
Haha that's nice of you. I was partly hoping to be able to make it pass as actual stop motion. I'm glad you enjoyed.
amazing:)
👍👌
Oooo I love the little details, the fluffy felt of the gulls and the subtle lines imitating fingers moulding the clay of the fish - and all rendered beautifully with nothing but CG? Very good work! A treat for the eyes. That's not to mention the tension of the film itself, oh boy.
Thank you so much for the kind words. Those little details were the main thing I was excited to play with when I started this project. Really glad you liked it!
Lovee it broo nice ideaaa
waw waw waw ❤
so cool !
i love the expressions on the fishs face
Thank you, I was very happy with the expression I could get from him given he was such a simple facial design and rig
Amazing project bro !
This is a nice and serene fish animation wow ! 멋지고 고요한 3D 애니메이션 와우! :)
Thank you!
Wow. Now I want to learn animation! This is awesome!
You should! I'm glad you liked it!
Saw this as part of Worcester film festival around this time last year! Fantastic job. Emulating stop motion look with CG worked so well!
Oh that's so cool, I wasn't able to attend that one myself, but that's amazing! I'm glad you liked it and remembered it haha.
🎸🐟👍🏼
how long did this take to render
Oh I couldn't say exactly but at least a couple weeks of leaving my computer running whenever I was at work or over night. And then a few shots still needed re-rendering with more samples to clean up the fuzz of the seagulls.
Wow!!! Really good. I had a really nice time watching this!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you
Simple but very fun ani. Good work!
Thank you 🙂
After watching this I feel encouraged to get back to my short movie project.
Thank you! You absolutely should!
You really know how to tell a story. I love everything about it.
Thank you so much, I'm glad you enjoyed!
what is your system hardware ?
Can't remember all my specs at the moment, but the main thing for this is my rtx3070 graphics card.
@@LiamJMWilson you think rtx4050 labtop and i7 13700h is good for animating??
Yeah you can definitely do it. The actual animation itself isn't so dependent on your hardware, it's the rendering that is very taxing, but with that you can leave it running for as long as it needs, just a question of time.
Water who put it in that situation also helped it 😄
birds walking animation is so funny
Glad you thought so! Thank you!
@@LiamJMWilson are they even rigged :D
They are rigged yeah, a simple enough rig but gave me enough to get the bonkers expressions from them.
love it!!
❤
how lovely, 10/10
A beautiful work
Thank you!
Great bro
Inspiring.. Great... Amazing..
Thank you :)
